1979 DeFever Down East Tri-Cabin

The Down East 40 was an original design by Arthur DeFever whose talents have brought forth many successful long-range, seaworthy powerboats. Unlike most trawler yachts on the American market today, the trawler 40 is not built in the Orient but In Santa Ana California USA, where it shares production facifities with the popular Down Easter line of cruising sailboats.  In the Down East Trawler 40 you will find seagoing characteristics derived from fishing trawlers to make the boat comfortable in rough seas combined with roominess to provide the amenities of modern life.

A well-flared bow blended into high bulwards will keep the boat dry as it plows into head seas.  Construction of the Trawler 40 follows conventional practice using a solid fiberglass hull and a fiberglass/foam core sandwich deck and cabin.  The hull is further stiffened with four massive longitudinal fiberglass foam-filled stringers which run the length of the hull.  What is most unusual about the construction of this boat are two fiberglass liners.  One is a basic cabin liner that extends from the lazarette bulkhead (the lazarette has its own liner) right up to the chain lockre in the forepeak.  It forms the base for all built-ins of the owner's stateroom, the entire deckhouse base including salon, galley and steering station and then drops to turn the forecastle into a guest stateroom  The complexity of this mold is unbelievable but the resulting liner shapes the interior like no other.
